Born in Buffalo, New York in 1863, Frank Edwin Scott moved to Paris to study at the École des Beaux-Arts. Studying under the highly influential French painter Alexandre Cabanel, Scott used his newfound home as his subject matter. In this portrait, Scott uses gestural brushstrokes that play with light and shadow in an Impressionist style to capture the look of a young Parisian man.
